Electrified Icon: The 2025 G 580e Powers Forward
September 25 2025 - Gary Mollohan

The 2025 Mercedes-Benz G 580e—officially known as the G 580 with EQ Technology—is the first fully electric version of the iconic G-Class SUV. Despite the shift to battery power, it retains the rugged character and angular silhouette that have defined the G-Wagen for decades. Underneath its reinforced ladder frame sits a 116-kWh battery powering four individually controlled electric motors, one at each wheel. This quad-motor setup delivers a formidable 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, enabling the G 580e to tackle steep grades, deep water, and rocky terrain with ease.

Performance is brisk for a vehicle of its size and weight—nearly 7,000 pounds—with a 0–60 mph time of around 4.4 seconds. Mercedes has also added unique features like the “G-ROAR” sound experience, which mimics the growl of its gas-powered predecessors, and an OFF-ROAD COCKPIT that displays terrain data on the 12.3-inch driver screen. The cabin remains a luxurious retreat, offering high-end materials, advanced tech, and bespoke options through the MANUFAKTUR personalization program.

Car and Driver awarded the 2025 G-Class a solid 8/10 rating, praising its blend of luxury, capability, and iconic style. As they put it: “Posh cabin, one of the most capable all-terrain SUVs, as much a style item as it is a tool.” Whether navigating city streets or conquering trails, the G 580e proves that electrification hasn’t dulled the G-Wagen’s edge.
